Spotlight On: Phillip Craig
New Affiliate member to Banks Mill Studios Phillip Craig, is currently studying for his MA in Art at The University of Derby. Using Sculpture and installation as part of his practice, his journey began in commercial arts as an illustrator working in graphic design and then later as a web developer.
Currently, Phil is working on the final part of his degree which can be seen at the MA Art show at Artcore Gallery in September. His work examines ritual and social performance through sculptures and paintings. His work will also aim to engage generative AI as an entity, “In much the same way as we pray or make a wish, whilst maintaining a little dark humour. There is a birthday cake a couple of altars and a machine to destroy gods!”
Phil explains, "my work is driven by a deep fascination with the religious, magical, and the absurd. I believe that art has the power to disrupt our everyday reality, allowing us to see the world through a new lens. By subverting established norms and embracing the unexpected, I invite viewers to question their preconceptions and embrace the dark places of uncertainty.”
The work itself takes the form of sculptures, paintings and installations. Making objects from difficult to use materials, old or discarded stuff that is no longer functioning as it was. There is a sense that he is giving them a new meaning and function, quite often as a ritual piece.
As Phil begins his journey as an Affiliate member, he is looking forward to connecting with current tenants and members in the Banks Mill community as a way to stay in contact with fellow creatives who are on the same path. “Having a community such as Banks Mill where you have people to talk too, provide advice and practical help, who have also come across the same hurdles, along with opportunities to progress your work and skills can make a huge difference.”
Although the end of his MA is just around the corner, Phil is already looking to the future with plans to continue to study a PHD by Practice as well as becoming more involved in proposing and organising group shows, he already has a place secured in the Banks Mil Foyer and Exhibition space in 2024. Over the next 12 months, Phil plans to look for funding and gallery opportunities to further his practice.
We are thrilled to have another Derby University graduate joining our ranks and look forward to seeing the MA degree show this September.
