Work from the 2018 International Print Exchange

International Print Exchange

This year, Green Door Printmaking Studio is celebrating the 10th year of their International Print Exchange!

IPE is a unique opportunity to see work from printmakers all around the world, to explore various printmaking methodologies and practises and to purchase quality prints at an affordable price.

In 2009, David Johnson (husband of Anna Johnson, Creative Director of Green Door Printmaking Studio) sent out the original call for interest to printmakers all around the world with the hopes that a few would be interested in a small studio, based in the United Kingdom, organising such an event. Within just 24 hours, over 400 positive emails from national and international printmakers were received and prompted the beginning of the first IPE in 2009.

David was diagnosed with terminal cancer shortly after the first exchange was completed, and after a precious few months with his family around him, sadly passed away on 4th June 2010. Whilst no longer with us, David’s legacy of the IPE has now reached its 10th year and Green Door Printmaking Studio is organising and hosting the event to both celebrate and commemorate the occasion.

Each participating printmaker creates and submits a limited edition of ten prints specifically for the exchange. These prints are created using a recognised fine art printmaking technique with archival materials. Of the ten prints submitted, Green Door Printmaking Studio keeps two; the first for their archive and exhibition; the second for sale to fund future exchange projects (in return, if sold, this printmaker will receive free entry to the following year's exchange). The remaining prints are randomised and sorted, and each printmaker receives eight random prints in return from participating printmakers.

Each year, prints submitted to the IPE are compiled into an artist’s book for both posterity and for sale. This year, being the 10th Anniversary of the event, the IPE will include a retrospective anthology of all prints ever submitted over the last 10 years into one publication, containing over 1000 images of prints from international printmakers, and will be available to purchase online.

The culminated prints will be exhibited at Banks Mill Studios, from 5th October to 3rd November
(open 11am - 3pm, closed Tuesdays and Sundays). Members of the public are invited to celebrate the launch on Friday 5th October (5pm - 8pm).
