Katy Makes is a new creative textiles business owned by Katy Rees in studio 4.7.
After graduating with a BA Hons in Drama, Katy completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Costume for Television, Theatre and Film at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and then went on to train as a Secondary Drama teacher on the Graduate Teacher Programme at Derby University.
After a successful career as a Head of Drama at schools in both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, Katy gave up working seven years ago to raise her young family. As a full-time Mummy to three children, Katy found that any spare time that she had was devoted to being creative…often becoming involved in the scarecrow festivals, Carnival floats and Christmas grottos!
With her youngest child about to start full-time school, Katy has launched her new creative textile business, Katy Makes and is delighted to have a studio in Banks Mill. Using her skills as a costume maker and teacher, she plans to deliver textile based workshops, courses, one-to-one tutorials and parties for people who would like to develop existing skills, learn new ones, or just want to have some fun doing something creative.
Current workshops include; Stitch & Bitch, Teepee Making Workshops, Little Sew & Sews (for children aged 8-12), Introduction to using a Sewing Machine, Mummy Makes, How to Design and Make a Waistcoat and Mummy & Me (parent and child class).
Katy would also like to introduce more courses in the near future such as Pattern Block Drafting Workshops, Create a Memory Blanket, an Introduction to Young Fashion Design (for teenagers) and also a Great Derbyshire Sewing Bee.
Katy Makes also runs parties for adults and children with a Crafternoon Tea Party theme and would be suitable for ages 7 – 107. These would be ideal as a child/teenager/adult birthday celebration or Hen party, for example, and can be tailored to the clients needs.
Katy has cutting table space and equipment for up to 8 people, brand new Janome Sewing machines and over-lockers and a wealth of experience and knowledge. Her workshops promise to be exciting and informative but delivered in a friendly, relaxed and fun style.
