How One Derbyshire Artist Transformed 50 High Street Windows in 9.5 Weeks
Derbyshire-based artist and photographer Pictoria has just completed one of the most ambitious public art projects the region has seen in recent years — and she did it one window at a time.
Commissioned by Amber Valley Borough Council as part of their Windows of the Season regeneration initiative, Pictoria took fewer than ten weeks to bring 50 independent high street businesses to life across Ripley, Heanor, Belper, and Alfreton.
Each piece began with a consultation, a shopfront photograph, and a bespoke digital design agreed with the owner — before a single brushstroke was made. Her continuous one-line style provided the thread, but every window told its own story with its own power.

The impact of public art isn’t always something you can plot on a graph — but when a business owner sees their window transformed and shoppers stop to look, the effect on wellbeing, pride, and sense of place is real and lasting. The project attracted coverage from both BBC and ITV, and was a genuine win for businesses, communities, and the high streets themselves.

Now that the project is complete, Pictoria is taking direct private bookings for window art across Derbyshire and beyond.
