MA Arts Graduate Residency Award and Exhibition

2024 MA Arts (Fine Art & Photography) Graduate and Banks Mill Affiliate Member, Abbie Sunter, will be showcasing a new body of work in a collaborative exhibition alongside acclaimed Indian ceramic artist Vinod Daroz.
Abbie Sunter graduated from the University of Derby’s MA Arts (Fine Art & Photography) degree in 2024, her mixed media installation ‘The Garden of England‘ earned her Artcore’s Emerging Artist Award, a £1500 residency and exhibition opportunity. Abbie will be creating a series of pieces that will be shown in conjunction with acclaimed visiting Indian Artist, Vinod Daroz. Working together out of The University of Derby’s ceramics department, the two will create a new series of works that will culminate in an exhibition at Artcore Gallery in the city centre of Derby.
The exhibition Samvāda (in conversation) with Clay – the Indo-British Ceramics Residency & Exhibition will open at Artcore Gallery this July. This exciting new exhibition will bring together acclaimed Indian ceramic artist Vinod Daroz and Derby-based artist Abbie Sunter for a month-long exploration of material, memory, and place through clay. From 20th June to 17th July, the artists will work together at Artcore’s newly established ceramics studio, fostering a cross-cultural dialogue through shared processes and practices.
As part of the residency, Artcore will be hosting a conversation with Abbie and Vinod, discussing their practices and what they hope to explore through this residency. There will also be the opportunity to work with Abbie and Vinod at in informal workshop in Derby’s new Market Hall, open to all, this workshop is free and will take place on Thursday 3rd July from 11am – 3pm. Join Abbie in making your own contribution to the Samvada in Clay exhibition. Abbie will guide you through the process of press moulding to make your own “Lucky Rabbit’s Foot” an amulet believed to bring good luck.!
Participants can add their own designs to their rabbits foot, with each piece eventually being fired and glazed, they will then be added to the final collection of works, symbolising community and positivity through collaboration.
The residency will culminate in an exhibition of these new works on 18th July, offering a glimpse into the unfolding artistic exchange between Abbie, Vinod and the Derby community.
