Shubham Tageja – New Tenant

How would you describe your business?  

My business is sound – Playing instruments, shaping music, and scoring visuals through performance and production. 

 

What’s the story behind why you started your business and what helped you to get to where you are today? 

My grandfather always wanted me to play the Bansuri (indian Bamboo flute). I was a guitarist back then, and it wasn’t until after he passed away that I actually picked one up and something about that soft, sweet sound just stuck with me. I never really put it back down. Since then, I’ve trained under some incredible teachers across Hindustani, Carnatic and folk traditions, so my playing sits somewhere between classical roots and a more Western way of thinking about harmony. Moving to Derby meant starting completely from zero, no contacts, no network, nothing. It took a while, but getting the chance to collaborate with established artists here made me feel like I was finally on the right track. These days my time is split between producing, teaching and performing, and honestly the thing that ties it all together is pretty simple: I just want sound to make an experience better, whatever that experience is. Being at Banks Mill gives me something I couldn’t get working alone at home, people around me, a space of my own, and a bit of that energy you only get from being near other creators. Longer term, I’d love to be scoring music for games and films, teaching a smaller group of students who are really in it, and getting my own original music out to audiences beyond Derby. 

 

 

What University did you graduate from? What course did you study? 

I graduated from Guru Gobind Singh Indraprasth University. I studied B.B.A (Bachelors In Business Administration) 

 

In what way do you think being based at Banks Mill will be able to help your business? 

I’ve only been here about a month, so it’s early days, but I can already tell it’s the right move. The connections alone make it worth it, being around other people building their own creative businesses means conversations happen naturally that just wouldn’t in a home studio. The rental fee is also a lot more manageable than other spaces I looked at, which makes a real difference at this stage. I’m looking forward to the marketing support too, since that’s not something I’ve had easy access to before. And even in this short time, just being surrounded by people constantly working on new ideas has already started shifting how I think about my own. 

 

Are you working on anything exciting in the studio right now? 

At the moment I’m producing music across a range of different genres, and experimenting with sound design for different visuals. Alongside that, I’ve been planning flute-based wellness workshops, using meditative ragas and breathwork. 

 

Tell us a little bit about your working techniques, how do you get started when planning a piece of music? 

I usually start with chord and tempo selection, working off a template of instruments I like to build with. From there I bring in a classical raga approach to shape the melodies. The first stage is a 30-60 minute brainstorming session where I just get everything down onto the DAW, No filtering, just capturing ideas. Once that’s done, I go back and filter out what’s not working, refining it down to what the piece actually needs. 

 

What are your plans in the studio for the next 12 months? 

Over the next year I want to grow every side of what I do, not just one thing. On teaching, I’m hoping to build up to 15 students I’m really working with regularly. I’m also starting a proper wellness workshop series, at least a couple of sessions a month, mostly with yoga studios and corporate spaces. On the production side, I want to get 2 original instrumental albums out into the world, build up a catalogue of tracks for sync, and hopefully land at least one film or game project.
