Stitched By Alan – Moving On

February 26, 2026

We have loved having Alan here at Banks Mill, in such a short time we've seen his business go from strength to strength, but with a new home comes new opportunity.

How did you first learn about Banks Mill Studios, and what motivated you to join us?

Over 2 years ago, I was working in my partners parents garage and needed room to expand. I searched for studio spaces in Derby and Banks Mill was the first to pop up! I went to view the building and fell in love instantly and knew I wanted a space there! I was so excited to be surrounded by makers and creatives!

What were some of the most significant challenges you faced when you started your business, and how did you overcome them?

I’d say time management was and still is a big challenge of mine. I love what I do and having the space has allowed me to separate work from home life. The studio space allowed me to also get messy and not worry about tiding up my creativity! I also gained a lot of confidence and support from banks mill which I’ll cherish forever.

Could you share a memorable moment during your time at Banks Mill that really stands out as a turning point in your creative journey?

Open studios is a brilliant event that allows the public to see your studio space. This gave me a lot of validation. Also my most memorable moments were the friends I have made whilst at Banks Mill. The support I have received from them throughout my journey is truly so special to me. I’ve made friends for life here and I’m so grateful.

Being a creative entrepreneur requires a unique set of skills. What did you do to support your professional development and business growth in those aspects?

As you know, I’m a young ambassador for the Kings Trust after completing their enterprise programme. This gave me the skills and guidance I needed to create a successful business. Banks mill also offered me opportunities to talk to students at the university which was also beneficial to me as it allowed me to gain confidence with presenting and showcasing myself.

Collaboration and networking often play a crucial role in creative industries. Can you share any instances where collaborating with other artists or makers at Banks Mill and the University enhanced your work or opened up new opportunities?

I created a brand ‘A Bit Patchy’ with fellow tenant and friend Rosie Yates! We have had such fun creating patches and T-shirts together and spending we want to continue, going forward! I think it’s allowed us both freedom with our work and to try something new!

Balancing artistic vision with commercial viability can be challenging. How did you manage to maintain your creative integrity while also building a successful business?

I think patience played an important role, all good things happen with time. I was blessed to have a lot of time to focus on orders but the downside of this was I didn’t get to have time to explore my own work! But when I got the chance to have a play with my own embroidery, it felt more of a treat, which was nice!

Graduating from Banks Mill Studios is a significant achievement. Looking back, what advice would you give to aspiring artists and makers who are considering joining Banks Mill?

Take the leap and just do it! You won’t regret it! Banks mill allowed me the space to grow my business and have fun! You’ll meet some amazing people who want to help you succeed! I’m a yes man and say yes to everything, what’s the worst that could happen?!

Lastly, let us know what’s next for you as you move to pastures new!

When I first started my business, my goal was to purchase my own house. Last year this dream became possible. So I’ve created my perfect home studio in my first home! I’ll be becoming an affiliate member so you won’t be getting rid of me that easy!
