This research-driven exhibition explores the complex interplay between Derby’s Victorian architectural heritage and the urban ecosystems found both within green spaces and the buildings themselves. Through a sophisticated artistic lens, the project encourages reflection on how urban development influences, or impacts upon, natural environments, with special emphasis on the multifaceted role of fungi, which are vital for supporting and creating life.
Pastel pencil and soft pastel techniques are utilized to create realistic portrayals of fungi, emphasizing their ecological importance and referencing the realism movement that was prominent during the Victorian era. These depictions are intentionally juxtaposed with stylized, fragmented Victorian architectural elements—primarily, though not exclusively—demonstrating influences from early 20th-century analytical cubism.
The exhibition highlights both the aesthetic aspects and the fragile habitats of fungi within the context of urban development. Its purpose is to encourage thoughtful discussion regarding human influence on fungal ecosystems, especially considering how modern construction projects impact these intricate environments that are essential to our species, including this frequently overlooked domain.
