Located on Bridge Street in the heart of Derby, Banks Mill Studios is a thriving creative hub managed by the University of Derby.
Once a historic textile mill, it now houses more than 40 artists, makers, and designers working across a wide range of disciplines, from illustration and ceramics to printmaking, music, and glasswork. The studios provide affordable workspaces, mentoring, and professional support, helping emerging creatives turn their passions into sustainable careers within a welcoming community.

Among the artists welcoming visitors this year are illustrator and printmaker Rosie Yates, and designer and audio producer Jim from Explore Studio. Together, they are introducing their latest project for the Open Studios event, an interactive printmaking activity that invites visitors to experiment with colour, design, and process.
“Last year’s Open Studios had such an amazing atmosphere,” says Rosie. “It reminded me how important it is to share your skills and connect with others. Having a space at Banks Mill has helped me gain confidence in what I do; it’s where I’ve really grown as an artist.”

That confidence has carried into her professional work beyond the studio. Earlier this year, Rosie illustrated The Little Book of Miriam by actress and writer Miriam Margolyes, a project she describes as both challenging and rewarding.
“It was a great opportunity that pushed me out of my comfort zone,” she says. “Working on something so personal and full of character gave me a real boost in my career.”

For Jim, creativity is inseparable from community. Combining his love of music, design, and print, he uses Explore Studio to bring different art forms together in innovative ways.
“I’ve always been into creating things, from music and posters to branding and printing,” he says. “Explore Studio brings it all together. What I enjoy most about the Open Studios event is the chance to collaborate and share ideas with other people. That’s what keeps it exciting.”

The Banks Mill Open Studios event gives visitors the opportunity to explore five floors of creative spaces, take part in workshops, and purchase unique handmade pieces directly from local makers.
“The community here is incredible,” adds Rosie. “Everyone supports each other, whether you’re an illustrator, potter, or musician. There’s always someone to share ideas with.”
This year’s event offers a rare glimpse into Derby’s vibrant creative scene, a celebration of art, collaboration, and the power of making together.
Entry to the event is free, and everyone is welcome to explore, create, and meet the artists who make Banks Mill such a vibrant part of Derby’s creative community.
